MTTR is a holistic solution that reduces material waste and time delays on construction sites by tracking key materials during the construction process. Through the app, the contractor has a better overview of materials management, which reduces costs and increases work efficiency. The solution is provided in collaboration with building material suppliers and uses RFID technology to register materials on site when delivered and installed.
In the building sector, it is estimated that 13% of all materials on construction sites goes directly to waste without ever being used.1 Building material waste is generated during construction works because of rework, errors, surplus orders, cut-offs of materials among others. Many of these mistakes occur due to insufficient material management at the construction site, coordination between subcontractors and time schedules that are not up to date with the work progress. This results in time delays, extra work and thus high costs for the contractor, with the rework alone accounting for 4-8% of total project costs.
Target user / Customer
The target customers are contractors in charge of big building projects with various phases. The type of building should be standardised (e.g. multistorey). The direct users of the system will be contractors and subcontractors working on site, as well as the building material suppliers.
Your solution and how the concept is feasible
The solution is an application delivered to contractors in partnership with building material suppliers (Danske Byggecenter – Building Supply DK) to track material use on site. This material tracking can help to evaluate the progress of scheduled activities. The system is set up by MTTR in collaboration with the building material supplier. Data from the BIM model, as well as the time schedule made by the contractor, are used as input to the system. Before the start of a construction phase, the time schedule is aligned with the planned use of materials. To track the building progress and material use, some key materials representative of the progress will be defined with the contractor. These key materials will be tagged with RFID labels containing product information. After being delivered, the materials are scanned by the contractor on site. When the components are installed, the subcontractor in charge of their installation scans the section. The system automatically registers the used materials thanks to RFID technology and the progress will be updated and compared to the schedule. The contractor will then know how many materials have been used and if there is a surplus that can be used in the next phase or if more materials need to be ordered before the end of the phase. The materials will thus be reused on site and time delays as well as surplus orders will be avoided. To assess the technical feasibility, further development is needed to align the data of the materials with the time schedule. At an economic level, the concept is feasible, nevertheless, some barriers with the supplier collaboration and the users should be considered.

We make revenue through payments per project, which are based on the project size, length and requirements. The contractor pays to access the system on a tablet. The costs for MTTR include RFID labels provided to the building material supplier, system development, database and software maintenance and marketing aspects.
Our solution creates a positive sustainable impact based on the three pillars of sustainability. Tracking the project progress as well of the usage of materials during construction works can decrease material waste and prevent time delays. This will also result in large savings of money for the different stakeholders and contribute to a more efficient building industry. By reducing surplus orders and material waste, the overall carbon footprint of the project can be reduced. This improvement of resource efficiency in construction is part of SDG #11B. On a social level, the solution can stimulate collaboration between different stakeholders.
