Team #7 // EcoHome
Executive Summery
We conceptualized an interactive application that shows the users their resource consumption compared to their neighbors’ and advises easy changes to reduce waste. This visualization creates a measured awareness of the wasted resources, and leads to a sustainable behavioral change and reducing expenses. Accomplishing a big community impact by small personal changes, we are proposing an online infrastructure for local Governments to boost their sustainability goals.
Problem
There is unsustainable behavior amongst the typical Danish citizen due to convenience and a lack of understanding of personal expenses and environmental impact. How do we use AR to promote a more sustainable home-economy?
Target user / Customer
Our target user is every community citizen interested into monitoring their finances, their housing efficiency, and their environmental impact. Our costumer are the local governments that have sustainable goals, therefore are interested into reducing the resource consumption and improving the quality of life of their community. Another possible costumer would be different stores sponsoring by discount codes.
Your solution and how the concept is feasible
Our solution is an Augmented Reality Application that creates sustainability awareness by visualizing resource consumption of the user’s home. Using data from your personal expenses you can compare your bills (water, electricity and heating) with the average amounts of your community by an interactive experience. The app will also give you tips & tricks to lower your consumption. This could be by changing habits or changing to more environmental-friendly appliances. The app will also help you set goals on your own or in a community. With this you can by motivated by your accumulative effort.
Today it is technologically possible to scan three-dimensional objects to trigger your phone. With an increase in IoT devices it will make it easier to see how much you use your different appliances. Furthermore, there are multiple startups that make it possible by machine learning to allocate energy consumption to your appliances which would further increase the value of our solution. AR is on the rise, with Microsoft and a lot of startups currently on the marked with glasses, while Apple, according to experts, are on the way with some as well. These solution will also increase the value of our solution by making AR more user-friendly.
Four unique value propositions
As our customer (local governments) is different from our users (it’s citizens), we’ve created a value proposition for our user in this segment, and will discuss the values of our customer in the financials segment….
- Creates a visual reinforcement on site via Augmented Reality.
- Compares user resource consumption with the community.
- Guides to improve by advising small changes in your daily routine. Creates large changes as a community.
- Monitors data and creates quantifiable awareness of sustainable behavior and housing efficiency.
Financials
Our project is an online infrastructure for Local Governments to take action into their sustainable development goals. We offer them a platform to nudge their citizens to be more sustainable as a community. This will bring added value to the city: (1) improving the sustainable image of the City Brand, (2) gathering quantifiable data on sustainable behavior, user consumption and housing efficiency, and, (3) improving the life quality of their inhabitants.
Impact
The main impact is to reinforce a measured awareness of resource consumption, with advises into small behavioral changes that create a joint effect.
The implementation of the application can: increase the water-use efficiency (SDGT 6.4), improve the energy-use efficiency (SDGT 7.3), improve efficiency in resource consumption to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation (SDGT 8.4), and, increase the participation of local communities in improving water management (SDGT 6.8). Increasing the city’s housing efficient resource consumption, the level of awareness and monitoring for a better sustainable management of resources, and understanding the housing status that diminishes risks, as well. (SDGT 11.10/12.1/12.7)

Team
In the process we have had a strong focus on finding a problem that could be solved by utilizing the strong point of Augmented Reality: putting objects into the real world and in context of what you see.
